Andreas Johnson
Liebling (Warner Music)
Low and behold, another Swedish artist breaking into the BC reviews! Andreas was born in southern Sweden, from jazz musician parents. However it was a period of time in New York that gave him the inspiration for most of his music.
Liebling is his second solo album, following on from Cottonfish Tales, and Brutal Awakenings when he was lead singer with Planet Waves. He made a welcome break into the UK charts last month with the Garbage-esque Glorious, and although that might be the most sparkling track on the album, the rest are not without their gloss either. His style is similar to early U2 in places, though perhaps without some of the edge of Bono's vocals.
The lyrics might be a bit simplistic occasionally, but being wrapped in a very accomplished pop / rock package, they cause little offence. Even with comparisons to others artists though, he still manages something individual. The second track People is almost as popp-ey as the first single, Breathing shows a rockier side, whilst others like Should Have Been Me and Please (Do Me Right) give a hint of a jazzy angle. Andreas Johnson has made very solid progress on the long, winding musical road, and as his voice and writing develop in time, so will his style mature. He is tipped for big things, and may well fulfil that promise too. It is tempting to lap up this album on the strength of Glorious, and if that hit the spot, then Liebling should satisfy too.
As Liebling is German for 'loved one', sung by a Swede in English, the European Union has obviously stretched it's influence to songwriters and not just farmers. Presumably he'll collect his royalties in Euros.
